Department of Thermal EngineeringHistory |
Since 1995, at the Department of Marine Engineering and Energy (MEE) of the Kherson Branch of the Ukrainian State Maritime Technical University (since March 25, 2004 - Kherson Branch of the National University of Shipbuilding), in addition to the traditional specialty "Marine Power Plants" (established in 1967), several new specialties were opened, starting with "Internal Combustion Engines," and later – "Refrigeration Machines and Plants" and "Thermal Power Engineering".
Given the large staff of the MEE Department as of 2003 and the presence of several specialties, by the order of the USMTU Rector, a new Department of Thermal Engineering was established (headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Serhiy Serbin). In 2015, Ph.D., Associate Professor Dmytro Konovalov became the head of the department, and since 2023, Ph.D., Associate Professor Halina Kobalava has been leading the department.
The Department of Thermal Engineering is a structural unit of the Power Engineering Faculty of the Kherson Educational-Scientific Institute of Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding and provides training at two levels of higher education "Bachelor" and "Master" (full-time and part-time studies) in specialties 142 Power Engineering (EPP Refrigeration Machines and Plants, EPP Refrigeration Machines and Plants and Air Conditioning Systems) and 144 Thermal Power Engineering (EPP Energy Management, EPP Thermal Power Engineering).
Mission of the Department of Thermal Engineering - training highly qualified competitive engineering personnel for the thermal power and power engineering industries, capable of contributing to the state's energy independence and infrastructure reconstruction through the implementation of innovative, resource-saving technologies, development of alternative energy, and formation of a new generation of specialists with European vision, critical thinking and deep understanding of national economy challenges, able to implement the strategy of technological modernization and sustainable development of Ukraine.
The main scientific priorities of the department staff include:
- alternative and renewable energy sources;
- improvement of heat recovery circuits, refrigeration machines and heat pumps;
- implementation of innovative heat recovery methods and development of energy-saving technologies;
- application of water-fuel emulsions in boiler installations;
- development of energy management systems, energy consumption monitoring systems, and improving the efficiency of industrial and municipal sector facilities.
In 2012, Dmytro Konovalov, Ph.D., Associate Professor, was awarded the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Prize for the most talented young scientists in the field of fundamental and applied research and scientific and technical developments for 2012 for the work "Trigeneration Technologies for Stationary and Marine Power Engineering".
